Doorway to the Infinite Yes
2002
Wood, glass, porcelain, slate
Hemlock Grove

A Victorian urban cemetery is the ultimate place of transition- from the commotion and stress of the city to a place of tranquility and serenity, from built space to natural space, and, most importantly, from the known world (life) to the unknown world (death). Doorway to the Infinite Yes is a metaphoric entrance/exit way for all of these reasons. This piece also pays homage to e.e. cummings, whose grave site is nearby. By incorporating this most appropriate of poems into the work, we are able to clearly hear his voice, embracing life:

i thank You God for most this amazing
day;for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky;and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes
