Horse Chestnut wood, glue
Horse Chestnut

In order to both memorialize and resurrect a tree from the cemetery grounds, I chose to work with a log that had been pruned from a once magnificent, but now declining, horse chestnut tree. It seemed appropriate in the context of a horticultural cemetery to suspend my usual visual language in deference to that of nature.

I carefully excavated decayed material from the log, to reveal a sculptural form determined by the underlying structure of the core of wood. As I removed the softer wood, I built a separate solid cylinder by gluing together all the chips and bark that came away from carving. In the finished sculpture the carved log and its fabricated double are joined, displaying the processes of deterioration and growth. I expect that over time this piece will slowly disintegrate.

Momentary is a collaboration of sorts- an interaction between nature and culture- and a meditation on the beginnings and endings of living things.
