Gateway Bench

Medford, MA
2004
Ipé, copper, yellow pine
on loan from the artist

The Gateway Bench is part of a series of outdoor benches I am working on. With these pieces I try to combine a sculptural approach to form with practical solutions to the problems faced by outdoor furniture. The materials used in this bench, copper and ipé (a tropical hardwood) are well suited to the New England climate and harmoniously complement the colors of the natural environment.

The title of the piece reflects the similarity of the back of the bench to a fence gate and suggests the idea that the bench is an invitation to sit down and open yourself to the landscape before you.
