Linda Foss Nichols
Aeolian Conduit

1998
Newport, RI
Polychromed and gold-leafed wood, piano wire, and zither pins with steel armature

Artist's Statement
A sense of place is essential to my work. Aeolian Conduit was created specifically for this landscape; it was inspired by the natural and sculptural beauty of Forest Hills Cemetery. The shape was suggested by the traditional obelisk memorials found at Forest Hills. Here I have emphasized its archetypal meaning as a powerful form which unites earth and sky, life and death.

Aeolian Conduit is also a wind harp, and its sound is utterly dependent upon natural forces. This piece was made to be placed in a cemetery, a place of passage and a place wherein nature's rhythms are all-powerful.
