Artist's
Statement
This piece is one of a series that explores deer imagery. Rather than
locking down the image in one solid silhouette, I build from the inside
out. No one line is right, yet cumulatively they realize the effect of
muscle and bone, revealing a lean, working skeletal structure- the exaggerated
fragility of a leg, the branching abstraction of antlers.
I scavenge construction sites for evocative shapes, gathering a stockpile
of twisted metal lines. I cut with the torch and then sketch in the air,
tacking structure and gesture together. The imagery comes from memory,
accumulate form a life-long fascination with animals, and is supported
with reference drawings and photographs. I try to convey an emotional
state through physical presence, and evoke a visceral response in the
viewer.
