Artist's Statement
The garden cemetery of Forest Hills is itself an island of trees and plants in a sea of metropolitan expanse. While it is a place of vibrant nature, it is far from wild and, as with Islands, there is an underlying control.

The islands in this installation echo the surrounding landscape in microcosm, yet they float in a separate domain, drifting with the wind. They relate to the elements as an apparition of land on the sun-flecked water, charging the air around them, and bounded by spirit.

I invite the viewers who experience the work to decide the true meaning of Islands. For me, they touch on the notion of a place aspired for, still distant, remaining unattainable as the water intervenes, shadowy and unsettled.
