Artist's Statement
Swept is an installation of handmade brooms formed of fallen branches, twigs, and leaves collected at Forest Hills. The brooms refer to the act of grave sweeping, traditionally done by relatives during the Chinese Clear Brightness festival. They speak of a promise to care for one another, even after death, or perhaps echo a spirit’s plea not to be forgotten.

Sweeping stirs up air and matter, while tending to something intangible. The installation lifts dead twigs and branches off the ground in masses of bristling energy, before they return to decay in fall and winter. Swept celebrates color, energy, seasons, and the humble form of the broom.
